Plan to operate buses without conductors – Sri Lanka Transport Council..
A senior official of the Ministry of Transport has said that it has been decided to operate all buses operating on expressways owned by the Sri Lanka Transport Board without conductors.
It is reported that this procedure will come into force from the 1st of July.
Also, it has been informed that the tickets will be issued before the buses start running and the tickets can be obtained from the bus driver.
Also, Minister of Transport Bandula Gunawardena said that the cabinet has given approval to put electric buses into service in Colombo.
The minister said that the focus has been on using electric vehicles for public transport as a solution to the increase in transport charges
Efforts are being made to electrify all public transport services like buses, tricycles and trains in future.
Also, the Minister said that electric tricycles will come in the market this year and the Department of Motor Transport Commissioner has already started the process of registering electric tricycles.
Minister Bandula Gunawardena also said that by using electric vehicles, we can reduce the environmental impact caused by fuels.
Meanwhile, Transport Minister Bandula Gunawardena has mentioned that steps have been taken to close down depots owned by the Sri Lanka Transport Board in various parts of the country.
The Minister further mentioned that the Sri Lanka Transport Board should be treated as a business and necessary changes should be made.
